I think an important part of self promotion is a strong online presence that can easily be kept up to date and allows networking with many designers. It is something that can’t ever go out of date like a piece of print or a business card.
Though now I have a strong online presence the next step will be working towards business cards and some promo items ready for the degree show. I have already started working on designs for these, but would like to make sure they are designed to best of my abilities and not rushed as like I said before these aren’t something that can be changed. I am also keen on finding the right printers and stock to represent myself.
Over the last semester there has been many struggles dealing with all the final major project throws at you. To write your own brief and then spend four months working on it tests your ability of self-motivation and time management to a new level.
I believe my biggest weakness has been my self-motivation. I have found myself a few times during this semester hitting brick walls with what to do next and then digging a hole to stay in for a week or so. Though my motivation faltered when I entered this problem it took a lot of self-motivation to be able to get back on track. When reflecting upon my project I can see the impact this has had on my work, I believe I could have pushed it a lot further to speed things along. After I graduate whether working in a studio or freelancing, if I find myself in a similar situation where I become low on self-motivation I will have to make sure I don’t ignore the problem and get back to the focus with the brief. I will do this by remembering to keep reading back over my progress to get to the essence of the brief.
Another weakness of mine is confidence, in my work and myself. I often need reassuring about my work and whether it is on the right track, it leads to me wasting to much time worrying and not enough time doing. My lack of confidence effects me most when presenting myself or my ideas to people, I often get nervous and forget what I am saying or back out of the situation all together. Though throughout my final major project I have had to overcome some confidence issues when contacting people about my project and when gathering primary research from around Swinton. After I graduate I aim to continue working on my confidence by pushing myself forward in to situations where I will need to talk clear and confident. It is important I work of this because it will be a necessary requirement when dealing with future clients.
However it is not all bad, I think my strengths have also become clear. Realization of when an idea needs to be adapted to work with the needs of a client and a brief is something I have come across a lot during this semester. Many times I have had to change my views of the final outcome for this brief when more research has come to light, or after I have reflected and evaluated an idea. Therefore I have no come up with an outcome that has a backlog of through research, variety of different ideas and development has led to the best outcome possible for the brief. After I graduate and go into a studio or freelancing I intend to keep reflecting on what I am doing to ask my self whether it answers the brief and responds to the client and target audience.
After I graduate I need to continue to work on my self-motivation and confidence to be able to get the most out of briefs and to be able present myself and my ideas well.
Stuck between strap lines that are professional, clear and tell you exactly what it is but are slightly boring and corporate. Then strap lines are are a little more personal to the community but would they get listened too?

Toby Ng - The World of 100
Have you ever asked yourself, what would the World look like as a small community of 100 people? Probably not. However, it is something to think about, as the reality would be startling - as much as you’d think so, the village would only have 7 computers, and only 1 person in the World Village would be educated at University level.
These facts are something that designer Toby Ng has thought about very carefully, and turned the results of his findings into a series of twenty infographics depicting ‘The World of 100’. Although aesthetically beautiful, with sharp lines and bold, vibrant colours, these infographics are often horrifying.
The posters look as though they have come straight out of a children’s book; is this to mirror the naivety of those that are most likely to be looking at them on their computers?“Look, this is the World we are living in.”
